Chrismukkah, the Mash-Up Holiday for Interfaith Families
Briefly

Growing up Jewish and largely secular, I experienced Christmas as a cultural occasion mainly through visiting department store windows and going to the movies with family.
Christmas for many Jews often meant seeing a film, like my visit to watch 'Schindler's List,' where the audience was predominantly Jewish. My father's disapproval of popcorn during such a solemn occasion highlighted the tension of the moment.
Interfaith marriages are becoming increasingly common among Jews, as indicated by the 2020 Pew Research Center study revealing that 42% of married Jewish individuals have a non-Jewish spouse.
This year's unique overlap of Hanukkah and Christmas, where Erev Hanukkah falls on Dec. 25, offers interfaith couples a rare opportunity to celebrate both traditions simultaneously.
