For millennia, humans and sheep have shared a symbiotic relationship, with sheep providing wool and requiring human care for shearing. However, due to a growing preference for inexpensive synthetic fibers, over 317,000 tons of wool are wasted annually as consumers move away from traditional materials. The exhibition, Formafantasma Oltre Terra, at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, runs from February to July and aims to address this dilemma, reflecting on the co-evolution of humans and sheep over 11,000 years while proposing ways to enhance this crucial relationship.
The symbiotic relationship between humans and sheep has evolved over 11,000 years, but today, most wool produced goes to waste due to consumer preference for synthetic fibers.
The exhibition, Formafantasma Oltre Terra, will explore this paradox of reliance and consider potential improvements in our relationship with sheep in the modern world.
