A Chelsea Arts Building Is for Sale, and the Artists Cry Foul'
Briefly

The West Chelsea complex at 508-534 West 26th Street, a vital hub for artists and galleries, faces sale following its owner's death. Despite tenants' protests, the estate prioritizes the building's sale to support the Raymond and Gloria Naftali Foundation. The loss of this artistic space threatens not only the livelihood of over 400 tenants but also the cultural fabric of the neighborhood. Discussions during a recent tenant meeting highlighted fears of commercial displacement and loss of community-driven initiatives that have historically thrived in the area.
Artists and the art galleries bring a lot of money to the neighborhood and enlist services which will also sadly disappear, said Judi Harvest.
Revenue from the sale of the building would support the activities of the Raymond and Gloria Naftali Foundation, which focuses on the arts and fighting antisemitism.
