I believe many of the systems that we build today really don't take full advantage of the hardware that is available to them.
If you are a startup, if you're doing less than one request per second, there is really no reason to go through a lot of the struggle at this point in the lifecycle with all the ins and outs of building a cutting edge, blazing fast production system.
