SAP has developed an alternative to its RISE with SAP program for migrating legacy systems on Microsoft's SQL Server to the cloud, called 'SAP ERP, private edition'. The move aims to offer customers more flexibility in transitioning their ERP systems while addressing their concerns about the slow and costly nature of typical ERP migration projects.
Historically, many SAP customers have hesitated to migrate to S/4HANA, with only 37 percent of SAP's legacy ECC customers having licensed the new system as of mid-2024. This hesitance can be attributed to the perception that migration projects are expensive, time-consuming, and complicated, leading to the introduction of more flexible migration options.
SAP's preferred migration approach, the RISE with SAP program, offers a comprehensive bundle of integration, cloud infrastructure, and software for users to move from outdated platforms to the latest cloud solutions. However, SAP acknowledges varying customer needs and has introduced an alternative pathway specifically for users of Microsoft SQL Server.
Mainstream support for ECC systems will end in 2027, raising urgency for customers to transition to new platforms. SAP's new 'private edition' option aims to alleviate migration fears and smooth the path to cloud adoption, facilitating a two-stage transition process that is more palatable for those wary of full-scale upgrades.
