The Vancouver Art Gallery has decided to suspend its long-planned new gallery project by Herzog and de Meuron, citing a dramatic increase in budget from C$400m to C$600m.
VAG director Anthony Kiendl expressed gratitude for the partnership, noting that it shaped the gallery's vision for a 21st-century museum, stating the Board's decision was difficult.
Herzog and de Meuron released a statement expressing disappointment over the decision, highlighting the collaborative process since 2014 and their adaptability to community needs.
The project's costs have alarmed Vancouver's arts community, particularly after over C$60m spent on pre-construction fees and a 50% increase in projected costs.
