Senegal: The Goethe-Institut opens its new building in Dakar
""I modified the properties of the clay to produce uniform bricks, creating a building with a modern look. That's so important: People really feel honored and taken seriously.""
"The architecture blends harmoniously into its environment with shadowed facades, interconnecting spaces and natural ventilation. Only a few supporting elements were built with reinforced concrete."
The Goethe-Institut in Dakar has a new sustainable building that respects local traditions while promoting global vision. Architect Francis Kere, the first Black Pritzker Prize winner, designed the structure using clay from Senegal's red soil, ensuring a cool interior. The building features airy designs, shadowed facades, and natural ventilation, with minimal use of reinforced concrete. Construction was managed by the local firm Worofila, specializing in bioclimatic architecture, emphasizing harmony with the environment and cultural significance.
