Ricardo Scofidio, co-founder of the renowned architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, passed away at 89 in Manhattan. Alongside his wife Elizabeth Diller, Scofidio revolutionized architecture through a conceptual art lens, creating groundbreaking projects like the High Line and major cultural institutions. Their firm, known for its innovative and challenging approach to design, gained notable recognition, including receiving MacArthur Foundation genius grants. Despite expanding into a large firm, Mr. Scofidio remained focused on intricate details, continually prioritizing artistic exploration over traditional client expectations in architecture.
Despite our success, we always approached our commissions as a way to question our clients' goals rather than simply fulfilling their requests. This perspective has shaped our innovative approach.
It's somewhat surprising to me that we are now seen as a large firm capable of tackling big projects. My focus has always remained on the details that matter.
