Sara Benabdallah, a Moroccan photographer, embraces photography as an artistic practice influenced by her creative upbringing in Marrakech. Surrounded by artists and photographers, she began her journey in moving images before transitioning to still photography. Her works resemble old masters' paintings, blending traditional and contemporary themes while telling culturally rich stories, especially those of overlooked Moroccan women. Benabdallah's photography is notable for its cinematic quality and the meticulous curation of each element within her compositions, which draw inspiration from Byzantine and Renaissance art to convey deeper narratives.
Photography found me rather than the other way around.
The mise en scène in my work is carefully curated - every object, color, and texture carries meaning.
Much of the photographer's work is focused on representing overlooked or marginalized narratives, particularly those attached to the lived experiences of Moroccan women.
I draw inspiration from traditional Byzantine art and Renaissance masterpieces for their masterful use of light, shadow and composition to tell profound stories.
