Matias Karsikas, a Helsinki-based artist, merges glass, wood, and ceramics in his botanical sculptures to reflect nature's resilience amidst human influence. His works evoke textures and surfaces, inspired by the natural world rather than direct depictions. Karsikas emphasizes color and form, crafting vibrant petals from glass and contrasting them with raw wood fragments. His public installation, 'Peukaloisen puutarha', aims to conjure childhood memories through playful scaling. Recently, Karsikas completed his first major exhibition at the Finnish Glass Museum and is in the process of creating new public artworks, highlighting his evolving artistic journey.
Listening to the material is a central principle in my work. These works do not directly depict figures or landscapes but instead draw inspiration from nature through textures and surfaces.
Playing with scale is intended to evoke memories of childhood. It was a time when everything seemed bigger, more magical, and more exciting.
