The 2025 Serpentine Pavilion in London, designed by Marina Tabassum Architects, showcases themes of impermanence and adaptability through a timber structure. Opening on June 6th, the pavilion features four translucent capsules, which create a dynamic lighting experience. Inspired by Bangladesh's hydrologic landscapes, the architect emphasizes the connection between architecture and time. With local resources driving material choices, Tabassum's design aims to reflect temporality and offers a space for public engagement with its flexible features.
'The pavilion is called A Capsule in Time for many reasons... pavilions have a temporality, which is not about time but about a moment-to embrace and enjoy it.'
'We haven't worked entirely with wood before because wood is not a material in Bangladesh as such... but here, it made sense,' she explains.
