Lamps transform ocean plastic into artful home decor - Yanko Design
Briefly

Plastic bags are used in excessive amounts globally, leading to significant pollution in oceans where marine animals often mistake them for food, resulting in fatal consequences. To combat this issue, innovative products like the Polycycle Illumination lamps, designed by Xuanhao Li, have emerged. These lamps are made from upcycled plastic film and feature a jellyfish-inspired design. The creation process emphasizes both environmental advocacy and artistic expression, transforming discarded materials into functional, beautiful light fixtures while raising awareness of plastic pollution.
Every year, a staggering 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used around the world, and unfortunately, a portion of these bags ends up drifting in our oceans.
The Polycycle Illumination table lamps offer a stunning blend of art, innovation, and environmental advocacy, crafted from upcycled plastic film packaging to help keep oceans safer.
Each lampshade is modeled using advanced parametric design, with original algorithms generating soft, floating forms reminiscent of jellyfish, which are threatened by plastic pollution.
The journey of the Polycycle Illumination collection begins with the collection of discarded plastic film, particularly the clear HDPE sleeves typically overlooked.
