Kombucha by-product used to create leather for traditional shadow puppet exhibit - Yanko Design
Briefly

Designers Nishtha Luhadia and Aditi Shinde have created Luminous Lore, an installation using SCOBY leather to showcase Tholu Bommalata, a traditional shadow puppet theatre of Andhra Pradesh.
Rather than traditional animal hides, the puppets in Luminous Lore are made from a unique leather derived from fermenting tea, sugar, water, vinegar, and SCOBY, offering a sustainable alternative.
The lamp created in the installation not only serves a functional purpose but also tells the story of the SCOBY's transformation, engaging the audience through sensory interaction.
The designers hope to inspire further exploration of biomaterials in industrial design, emphasizing SCOBY’s potential for growth in diverse sizes and shapes.
