Juxtapoz Magazine - Yusuke Hanai "Give a Hand, Take a Hand" @ Shinsegae Gallery, Seoul
Briefly

In 2020, Juxtapoz magazine responded to the tumultuous environment created by the pandemic and the social justice movement, particularly following George Floyd's murder. Key features included a Kelly Beeman cover reflecting familial tension during lockdown, while Bisa Butler celebrated Black American craft. Amani Lewis explored identity in a changed world. By Spring 2021, hope was sought through Yusuke Hanai's inviting and communal visual language, exemplified in his exhibition titled 'Give a Hand, Take a Hand'. His work seamlessly blends design and fine art in a way that emphasizes inclusivity and connection.
It seems apt that his new show in Seoul is called Give a Hand, Take a Hand, because that is often what his visual language is about; it has elements of comic-book narratives and commercial surf illustration.
Bisa Butler was a celebration of the strength of Black American craft, and Amani Lewis provided a context of identity in a post-COVID, post-Floyd discourse.
For us at Juxtapoz, putting out a magazine in 2020, with the pandemic and social justice revolution, was, in a sense, a reaction to something very visceral.
Yusuke Hanai's imagery gave that soulful energy we needed, as we were looking for some hope and a cover of collective sharing.
