Jordan Casteel, artist who 'stands out in her generation of painters', joins Thaddaeus Ropac gallery
Briefly

Thaddaeus Ropac has begun representing American painter Jordan Casteel, collaborating with New York's Casey Kaplan. Casteel's first exhibition under Ropac will occur in London this April, followed by her debut solo show in Europe the following year. Known for her vibrant, large-scale works depicting community life, Casteel engages subjects in their own environments instead of the studio. Her approach emphasizes authentic connection and captures the complexity of human emotions. Casteel's art will feature in an upcoming exhibition exploring the representation of Black figures in contemporary art.
Jordan Casteel's work is included in the touring exhibition The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure, enhancing her visibility in contemporary art.
Painting, Casteel says, becomes a tool to get people to see the multiplicity of ourselves: our sadness, our joy, our love, our loss, our moments of stillness.
Instead of asking her subjects to pose within a traditional studio, Casteel often photographs them where she encounters them, meeting people where they are.
