The sets nimbly subvert the familiar with the fantastical-layering architectural homages and cinematic razzle-dazzle into an expansive magical realm, avoiding past pitfalls.
My goal was to go beyond the matte paintings and really let the audience step into Oz, aiming for an immersive space where characters could come to life.
We needed new excitement, color, whimsy in the adaptation while respecting the history of Oz; it's a tightrope walk between homage and innovation.
Taking inspiration from local farming, we imagined vibrant fields of tulips, planting nine million bulbs as a backdrop, creatively merging nature with design.
