Futuristic Modular Installation Redefines Public Spaces and Fosters Community in Shanghai - Yanko Design
Briefly

Curly Cube, designed by People's Architecture Office, is an innovative modular installation along the Huangpu River, showcasing a striking combination of soft curves and geometric sharpness. Drawing inspiration from natural forms like the Gyroid minimal surface, it features tensioned membranes that allow for expansive, lightweight structures. During the day, it serves as a serene refuge amid Shanghai's hustle, while at night it transforms into a captivating spectacle. The design highlights the principles of tensegrity, creating a dynamic interaction between the installation and its users, emphasizing the importance of creative urban spaces.
Curly Cube, a stunning modular installation by the People's Architecture Office (PAO), transforms an urban space into a playground of light, shade, and interaction.
The duality of tensile softness and geometric precision in Curly Cube creates a compelling structure that interacts dynamically with its environment, offering both beauty and function.
By day, Curly Cube’s translucent membranes filter light to create soft, inviting spaces for relaxation, while at night, the installation reveals its true magic.
Inspired by the Gyroid minimal surface, the design uses curvilinear tensile membranes stretched over lightweight frames, fusing mathematics and nature with innovative architecture.
