From "how might we" to "at what cost"
Briefly

Exploring possibility involves identifying intended benefits and their short- to medium-term consequences. It also entails considering long-term ripple effects, understanding who gains, and finding ways to amplify positive outcomes. Conversely, exploring potential risks includes recognizing possible harms and short- to medium-term downsides. Long-term consequences may stress systems and harm vulnerable groups. Designers must weigh who pays the costs and seek to reduce harm while achieving beneficial trade-offs. An ethical design approach involves serving users and addressing environmental responsibilities.
By asking yourself 'How Might We' along with 'At What Cost' you will gain clarity on who stands to gain or lose, what trade-offs might exist.
Designers have an ethical responsibility to look deeper and expand wider. Our ultimate goal should be to serve the people who will use our designs.
Clients’ goals and the needs of people and the planet should ideally align, as clients make solutions for the people.
Designers should be making intentional choices, over risking unintentional harm, understanding the potential consequences of their work.
