F5: Amber Pan Talks an Iconic Lamp, Sculpture + More
"I realized my true passion lies in interior design, which I see as a kind of stage for mise-en-scène. A space can tell a story with a quiet, almost silent power—you can sense who the main character is just from the details around them."
"In celebration of imperfect beauty, the patina of time is welcomed, not erased. Oxidized metals, weathered wood, and softened edges are embraced rather than discarded, each a record of transformation."
"In many ways, interior design and filmmaking share that same language. Both are about creating a world through space, light, and composition."
Amber Pan initially pursued architecture but discovered her true passion in interior design, viewing spaces as stages for storytelling through environmental details. After designing her own residence, she gained confidence in her vision and partnered with Michelle Song to establish Studio ŪMA, a London-based interior architecture firm. The studio celebrates imperfect beauty by embracing patina, oxidized metals, weathered wood, and softened edges as records of transformation rather than flaws. Pan balances intention with restraint across residential and commercial projects, finding fulfillment in the chaotic creative process of ideation and trial-and-error. She aspires to apply her aesthetic sensibilities to filmmaking, recognizing the shared language between interior design and cinema in creating worlds through space, light, and composition.
