"The Unfold Form significantly reduces resource use in construction, utilizing 60% less concrete and 90% less steel, addressing environmental concerns effectively."
"With its innovative geometry, the Unfold Form creates a self-supporting structure capable of holding 1,000 kg of concrete using bending-active plates."
The Block Research Group at ETH Zurich has developed the Unfold Form, a reusable formwork system that significantly cuts down on concrete and steel usage in construction. Led by Lotte Scheder-Bieschin, this inventive system employs a fan-shaped structure made of lightweight plates that can be folded for transport. Upon arrival at the construction site, these plates unfold into a strong, self-supporting shape, capable of holding substantial weight, thus enhancing efficiency and sustainability in building practices by minimizing carbon emissions and material waste.
