The Block Research Group at ETH Zurich has developed the Unfold Form, a reusable formwork system that significantly cuts down on concrete and steel usage in construction. Led by Lotte Scheder-Bieschin, this inventive system employs a fan-shaped structure made of lightweight plates that can be folded for transport. Upon arrival at the construction site, these plates unfold into a strong, self-supporting shape, capable of holding substantial weight, thus enhancing efficiency and sustainability in building practices by minimizing carbon emissions and material waste.
The Unfold Form significantly reduces resource use in construction, utilizing 60% less concrete and 90% less steel, addressing environmental concerns effectively.
With its innovative geometry, the Unfold Form creates a self-supporting structure capable of holding 1,000 kg of concrete using bending-active plates.
