elmgreen & dragset's six-seat bar pavilion appears like a mirage in thai art forest
Briefly

Elmgreen & Dragset's K-BAR, debuting on February 1, 2025, is a site-specific installation in Thailand's Khao Yai Art Forest. Named after German artist Martin Kippenberger, the intimate pavilion accommodates six guests, blending urban design with natural surroundings. It features a sculptural, charcoal-gray exterior and a classic metropolitan bar interior. Open only once monthly, K-BAR includes a permanently installed Kippenberger painting, engaging audiences in discussions about cultural discourse and the complexities of repatriation in art.
On most days, visitors will encounter K-BAR as a sculptural entity, a charcoal-gray pavilion emerging from the dense forest like a mirage.
The decision to install a European painting in a remote Southeast Asian forest inverts traditional debates on the repatriation of looted artifacts.
