The Hiyoshi Ribbon Terrace, designed by Jorge Almazán and Keio University StudioLab, improves a sunken amphitheater at Keio University's Hiyoshi Campus by incorporating a shading structure. This project emerged in response to the amphitheater’s limited use due to intense sunlight exposure. The design employs vibrant, ribbon-like fabric panels that provide shade while allowing airflow and light. Following its completion, studies noted a significant increase in student visits, demonstrating the terrace's effect on social interactions and outdoor activities, while thermographic data confirmed the cooling benefits of the shaded areas.
The bright orange fabric contrasts with the surrounding greenery and adds vibrancy to the concrete courtyard, creating a visually appealing and functional outdoor space.
Observational studies revealed a 1.5 to 2-fold increase in visitors compared to the same period before the project's implementation, demonstrating the terrace's popularity.
