bjarke ingels group unveils sankt lukas hospice, a village-like center in denmark's woodlands
Briefly

The newly unveiled Sankt Lukas Hospice in Denmark, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, serves as a palliative care facility rooted in the Sankt Lukas Foundation's history. Spanning 8,500 square meters, this hospice incorporates Denmark's first day hospice and specialized units for various age groups. Designed with patient comfort in mind, it emphasizes safety, togetherness, and nature integration. Each patient room features access to private terraces and gardens, while the farewell garden allows for serene final moments. The design replaces traditional hospital corridors with smaller interconnected buildings, creating a tranquil, healing environment.
Each patient room at Sankt Lukas Hospice is designed with direct access to a private terrace and views of the surrounding green garden, reinforcing the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.
Bjarke Ingels describes the project as 'a peaceful and poetic environment' where individuals can connect with nature and observe the changing seasons.
The design prioritizes three core principles - safety and a sense of home, solitude and togetherness, and arrival and farewell, creating a nurturing hospice atmosphere.
Instead of the linear corridors of hospitals, we have created an environment of smaller buildings arranged around protected natural gardens, fostering a sense of comfort.
