The size of the outbreak is the largest recorded outbreak connected to unpasteurized milk in more than two decades, highlighting the risks associated with raw dairy products.
Before a preliminary count of 165 cases, the outbreak's scale was underestimated. Michael Osterholm mentioned the possibility of the total cases being far higher due to underreporting and lack of testing.
