"WOW atelier has designed an analog hi-fi console that draws conceptual reference from Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, translating themes into a piece of domestic furniture. The project was developed as part of a long-term residential collaboration rather than as an independent commission, allowing the object to be integrated into the architectural and framework of the house. The console was designed and fabricated by WOW atelier, an integrated practice working across architecture, interiors, and in-house production."
"Constructed from American walnut, the cabinet references the tonal depth and material character of the Overlook Hotel interiors. CNC-milled paneling reinterprets the film's wainscot detailing, abstracted into a repetitive system that emphasizes rhythm and proportion rather than ornament. The overall form remains restrained and symmetrical, reinforcing its architectural presence within the space. For the interior, creative studio WOW atelier introduces a contrasting material palette. Red wool felt lines the cabinet, creating a clear visual and tactile distinction from the exterior."
WOW atelier designed and fabricated an analog hi-fi console as an integrated architectural element within a residence during a long-term collaboration with the client. The object emerged nearly two years into the design process through ongoing dialogue and a shared interest in The Shining's architectural language, controlled compositions, and psychological undertones. The exterior is constructed from American walnut with CNC-milled paneling that abstracts the film's wainscot into a repetitive system emphasizing rhythm and proportion. The restrained, symmetrical form reinforces architectural presence. The interior is lined with red wool felt, includes integrated linear lighting, and embeds the phrase 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' at vinyl-sleeve scale, defining and structuring the listening experience.
