A Colorful, Architecturally Adventurous London Victorian Terrace House Remodel
Briefly

Russell Vandyk and Alan Martin Day, after 40 years in their North London home, opted for a remarkable renovation. They hired Studio Ben Allen to create a two-story extension, prioritizing innovation in off-site fabrication using prefabricated pigmented concrete. The result is a vibrant and modern space that retains the essence of the original Victorian structure, earning accolades for its design. The project, named The House Recast, highlights a double-height skylit kitchen and a unique upstairs bathroom, ultimately receiving the award for best new home improvement in 2021 from the NLA's 'Don't Move, Improve!' contest.
The addition now houses a double-height new skylit kitchen with a mezzanine that connects to the existing main stair and leads to a very memorable new bath.
We chose these colors because they're similar to the copper and terracotta used on some of the local Victorian buildings of note,
the architects...took the opportunity to 'push the boundaries of off-site fabrication, something we felt was lacking in small-scale residential projects.'
Dubbed The House Recast, the remodel was named 'best new home improvement project' of 2021 in the NLA's annual 'Don't Move, Improve!' contest.
