Decking the halls of America's most famous home is an all-hands-on-deck effort—80 trees, 2,000 faux doves, and 10,000 feet of ribbon don’t just float from White House storage into the 200-year-old estate's grand halls and parlors.
The role of volunteer decorator at the iconic dwelling is a highly coveted one. Applications opened up all the way back in August and being selected is far from guaranteed.
It took interior designer Karolyn R. Spagnolo three tries before she was chosen in 2022. She was one of about 150 volunteers selected from a pool of about 12,000 applicants.
Many of the decorations were repurposed from years past. 'We actually pull archived items from a secret location. [What] I saw within those walls is something I will relive in my memory forever,' Spagnolo says.
