Monogamous oldfield mice evolved a novel cell type expressing AKR1C18 in the adrenal gland, producing more 20α-hydroxyprogesterone inducing monogamous-typical parental behaviors compared to promiscuous deer mice.
Quantitative trait locus mapping revealed genetic variation driving expression of GADD45A and tenascin N in oldfield mice, contributing to the emergence and function of the novel cell type.
