Saquon Barkley's recent two-year, $41 million extension with the Philadelphia Eagles positions him as the highest-paid running back in NFL history. Barkley expressed hopes that this contract will rejuvenate a struggling running back market, urging for increased pay for upcoming talents like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs. His deal, featuring $36 million guaranteed and potential for an additional $15 million, highlights the stark contrast between running back and wide receiver salaries, with many receivers exceeding $20 million annually. Barkley’s record-breaking 2024 season performance set the stage for this lucrative contract, which he hopes will benefit future running backs.
"I hope it does what it's supposed to do," Barkley said Monday. "Every other position, the value increases each year. For the Bijan's [Robinson] and the [Jahmyr] Gibbs', I know [James] Cook is up, too -- all those guys who are up need to get paid."
The extension, which made Barkley the highest-paid running back in NFL history, includes $36 million guaranteed at signing. Barkley is the first running back making more than $20 million per year.
