Chicago Skyway Bridge among 68 that should be assessed after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse: NTSB
Briefly

Following a bridge collapse in Baltimore, the NTSB recommended vulnerability assessments for 68 bridges, including Chicago's Skyway Bridge and Wisconsin's Leo Frigo Bridge. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy indicated that such assessments could have prevented the Francis Scott Key Bridge disaster. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), however, contends that the incident was due to the negligence of the container ship Dali. The MDTA has committed to reviewing the NTSB's recommendations and will provide updates on any actions to enhance bridge safety.
NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy emphasized that had a vulnerability assessment been conducted by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), the Key Bridge collapse could have been prevented.
In response to the NTSB's findings, the Maryland Transportation Authority argued that the collapse was solely due to the negligence of the container ship, Dali, and its operators.
The NTSB recommended that the Chicago Skyway Bridge and Leo Frigo Bridge undergo vulnerability assessments to safeguard against potential collapse from vessel collisions.
The MDTA acknowledged the NTSB recommendations and is reviewing them, pledging to provide a follow-up update within 30 days regarding their intended actions.
