Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Strategy With Two New Subsidiaries
"Japan has built the best regulatory framework in the world for digital assets. Now it needs the companies, the builders, and the infrastructure to match. The move marks a step toward developing services and capital markets tied to Bitcoin as the company deepens its role in the broader digital asset ecosystem."
"Metaplanet Ventures will function as the firm's venture capital arm, with plans to deploy roughly ¥4 billion over the next several years. The investments will target companies building financial infrastructure for bitcoin in Japan, including platforms focused on lending, payments, custody, derivatives, stablecoins and compliance tools."
"The venture arm will operate across three initiatives: venture investments in early-stage and growth-stage startups, an incubator program for founders developing bitcoin infrastructure, and a grants initiative for open-source developers, researchers and educators."
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed bitcoin treasury firm, is expanding beyond bitcoin holdings by establishing Metaplanet Ventures and Metaplanet Asset Management. Metaplanet Ventures will function as a venture capital arm deploying approximately ¥4 billion over several years to fund companies building bitcoin financial infrastructure in Japan, including lending, payments, custody, derivatives, stablecoins, and compliance tools. The venture unit will operate through three initiatives: venture investments in startups, an incubator program for founders, and grants for open-source developers and researchers. The company's first investment is a ¥400 million commitment to JPYC Inc., a Japanese stablecoin issuer, during its Series B funding round. This expansion reflects Metaplanet's belief that Japan has strong regulatory foundations for digital assets but needs deeper ecosystem development and infrastructure.
