AI.com goes for $70M as crypto boss bets big on buzzwords
"With assets like AI.com, there are no substitutes. When one becomes available, the opportunity may never present itself again."
"There is a big desire for us to own this touchpoint, otherwise you get commoditized. I thought it was quite interesting that one person can own two domains that stand for such important categories."
"10 to 20 years."
Kris Marszalek, CEO of Crypto.com, paid $70 million to acquire the domain AI.com, a sum that set a new record for domain sales. The transaction was brokered by Larry Fischer of getyourdomain.com and surpassed the previous record held by CarInsurance.com. Marszalek cited long-term strategic reasons and a desire to own the primary touchpoint to avoid commoditization. He hopes AI.com can offer features similar to OpenClaw while avoiding related security problems. Crypto.com reports more than 150 million users, and Marszalek stated a planning horizon of 10 to 20 years amid broader investor anxiety over AI spending.
