A second cryptocurrency investor, William Duplessie, was arrested for allegedly participating in the kidnapping of a man who was tortured for weeks to obtain Bitcoin account details. The victim, an Italian national, managed to escape after enduring severe abuse, including electrical shocks and physical violence. Duplessie's arrest follows that of John Woeltz, another crypto investor involved in the scheme. This incident highlights a worrying increase in violence targeting wealthy cryptocurrency holders amidst a rising trend of crypto theft and criminal activity.
Authorities say Duplessie and Woeltz lured the victim into an eight-bedroom townhouse in Manhattan's Soho neighborhood to steal his Bitcoin fortune.
Over the next 17 days, the man told police he was bound by the wrists, shocked with electrical wires, pistol-whipped.
