The World Health Organization (WHO) approved the first rapid diagnostic test for mpox, significantly reducing the time needed for results which historically took days.
Yukiko Nakatani, WHO's assistant director-general, called the new test a significant milestone and emphasized its role in increasing access to medical products in underserved regions.
In Africa, only 40% of the more than 30,000 suspected mpox cases this year have been confirmed, underscoring the urgent need for improved testing capacity.
With mpox declared a global public health emergency, the WHO and African nations are ramping up testing and vaccination efforts to combat the health crisis effectively.
