Sierra Leone has declared a public health emergency due to two confirmed cases of mpox, prompting immediate actions mandated by the Public Health Act to contain the outbreak.
Health Minister Austin Demby emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, 'The public health emergency allows us to act immediately to mobilise the resources needed to contain the disease, prevent further spread and provide care to those affected.'
Following the first confirmed case, Sierra Leone's government is increasing border surveillance and initiating a national awareness campaign to inform citizens about mpox.
Demby reassured the public, citing the country's healthcare preparedness based on past experiences with Ebola and COVID-19, and urged citizens to report any suspected cases promptly.
