First U.S. case of mpox variant reported in San Mateo County
Briefly

The first confirmed U.S. case of the more severe Clade I mpox variant has emerged in a traveler from East Africa, though local spread remains low.
While Clade I mpox caused a higher mortality rate in past outbreaks, recent cases suggest a lower death rate of around 1% with adequate medical care.
Mpox was previously declared a worldwide public health emergency due to the rapid spread of Clade II, but recent evidence indicates that Clade I may cause milder illness.
Public health officials are notifying close contacts of the isolated Clade I patient; however, spreading in California or the U.S. is currently not evidenced.
