COVID-19 five years later: A look back at the pandemic and how it changed our lives
Briefly

Five years since the onset of COVID-19, the world reflects on its profound impact. Beginning in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, COVID-19 triggered immediate global panic and initiated shutdowns. The first confirmed U.S. case appeared on Jan. 20, 2020, followed by lockdowns and the declaration of a pandemic by the WHO on March 11, 2020. Over time, we have learned about the virus and its effects, with over seven million global deaths attributed to it, although the evolving nature of the data continues to present challenges in understanding its full impact.
"I remember kind of like we were like, almost laughing about it because it was like, oh, wow. Like, there were, like, this stuff on the internet about it. Just. This is so crazy. This will never affect us all the way over here," said Penn State University Student Caleb Mowery, reflecting on the initial reaction to COVID-19.
"On March 11, 2020, more than 100,000 cases of the virus were in 114 countries and the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic."
"The virus has been blamed for more than seven million deaths worldwide, although the data, like everything else about the virus, is still being researched and updated."
