Heine Bros operates 17 company-owned shops and one licensed location in Louisville and is known for early adoption of sustainable sourcing practices including Fairtrade, USDA Organic, direct trade, and cooperative buying. Workers voted to unionize in 2022, making the company the nation’s second-largest unionized coffee chain, and the union reached a contract with the company ten months later. The business began in 1994 with a single Highlands location founded by Mays and Gary Heine.
