The Forces Behind Kumiko and Nobody's Darling Prove They Are Spirited Women
Briefly

Sammi Katz, an early female bartender from a Manhattan cocktail bar, has published "Spirited Women: Makers, Shakers & Trailblazers in the World of Cocktails". The book aims to uplift women's stories in the alcohol industry, traditionally dominated by men. Through various profiles, including accomplished women in roles from bartending to distilling, Katz and illustrator Olivia McGiff strive to challenge outdated gender stereotypes regarding drinking. They also highlight a survey revealing that 60% of bartenders today are women, showcasing their increasing presence and contribution across diverse job types in the industry.
Alcohol and spirits is still considered a male-dominated space, both from behind the bar and the other side of the bar, where there are stigmas of what women drink and what men drink.
We really wanted to debunk and break down these outdated notions by showing a bunch of women doing incredible things.
There was a study that just came out that said 60 percent of bartenders are female, which is so cool, but I think we also wanted to just show the breadth of job types and things that women are doing in the industry.
Being part of Spirited Women was an incredibly important opportunity to highlight the contributions of women in an industry that has often overlooked their achievements.
