White Sox To Select Rikuu Nishida
The White Sox plan to select Rikuu Nishida’s contract from Triple-A Charlotte before a game against the Twins, requiring corresponding 26-man and 40-man roster moves because he is not on the 40-man roster. Nishida will make his Major League debut when he appears. He reached the majors without the NPB background common among many Japanese players, instead playing college baseball at Oregon and being drafted by the White Sox in 2023. He is hitting .347/.454/.395 in 129 Triple-A plate appearances. His offense is driven by speed, baserunning success, and frequent walks, while his main weakness is limited power, with only two home runs and a low slugging rate in the farm system. Defensively, he has experience at second base and left field, plus some time at other outfield spots.
"The big flaw in Nishida's game is a near-total lack of power, as he has two homers and a .340 slugging percentage over 448 games in Chicago's farm system. This may be why Baseball America and MLB Pipeline don't list Nishida among the top 30 White Sox prospects, though Chicago's pretty deep minor league system may also be a factor. Defensively, Nishida has primarily been used as a second baseman and left fielder, though he has a good deal of experience at the other two outfield position"
