The White Sox received troubling injury updates as right-hander Drew Thorpe is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, while infielder Brandon Drury suffered a fractured left thumb during practice. Thorpe, who was recently acquired in a trade and had faced prior elbow issues, showed promise last season but has been on a challenging recovery path. Drury, demonstrating impressive form this spring after a disappointing previous season, will have a follow-up visit regarding his injury, impacting his chances for the upcoming season.
Thorpe's surgery, at a date to be determined, will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister.
Drury has a followup visit Monday with Dr. Donald Sheridan in Scottsdale.
Thorpe was acquired along with three others from the Padres a year ago for Sox ace Dylan Cease.
Signed to a minor league deal, Drury, 32, was showing signs of returning to his Silver Slugger Award form.
