Watch: Seiya Suzuki Singles to Start Wild Triple Play -
"Even among the rarest events in baseball, the triple play turned by the Giants against the Cubs on Sunday afternoon in Scottsdale stands out. Most of these plays start with a hard grounder or liner hit right at an infielder, but this one started with a single. In fact, the Cubs put all of their first three batters on base to open the game. Matt Shaw and Alex Bregman both walked before Seiya Suzuki flopped a lob wedge into right-center to start the madness."
"Bregman got a good read on the ball and was chugging around second, and Suzuki was looking to grab an extra base under the assumption that the throw would go home. That was indeed the case, only Shaw had been held at third. The Giants cut off the throw and relayed to second to get Suzuki. Bregman had committed, but he was called out because Shaw was already occupying third."
A rare triple play unfolded in Scottsdale when the Giants erased three Cubs runners on a single-opening inning. Matt Shaw and Alex Bregman walked to load the bases, and Seiya Suzuki hit a shallow single into right-center. Bregman advanced aggressively, expecting the throw to home; the throw was cut off and relayed to second to retire Suzuki. Umpires called Bregman out at third because Shaw was already occupying the bag. Shaw left the bag, apparently thinking he was out, and was tagged to complete the triple play and end the inning. The play combined heads-up defense and base-running confusion to produce an extraordinarily unusual result.
