The Queens Zoo welcomes three rare Andean bear cubs, born on Jan. 3, marking a unique and special occurrence as Andean mothers usually have one or two cubs.
With less than 18,000 Andean bears worldwide, the Queens Zoo's breeding efforts aim to diversify the gene pool, contributing to conservation of this endangered species.
Adult Andean bears can reach up to five to six feet in length with males weighing up to 340 pounds and females around 200 pounds, distinguishable by cream-colored markings.
The Andean bear cubs will later be transferred to other zoos in the US to aid in promoting the growth of their population and ensuring a sustainable future for the species.
