The Cubs signed infielder Hager to a minor league deal over the weekend. He appeared in one game for their complex affiliate in Arizona before being assigned to Triple-A Iowa.
Hager, a right-handed hitter, has 42 games of MLB experience with the Mets and Diamondbacks. In limited play, he hit .197/.307/.224 with 31 strikeouts between 2021-22.
Hager, the 32nd overall pick in 2011, boasts over 500 games in Triple-A with a .242/.301/.389 line. He mostly plays shortstop but has versatility in second and third base.
Hager fills the void left by Nick Madrigal's injury for the Cubs, adding experienced depth to their Triple-A infield lacking in veteran players.
