Ying Ying, a panda in Hong Kong, delivered twins at 19, marking the first natural panda births in the city and highlighting the significance of her advanced age in a species known for low birth rates.
Ocean Park Corporation's Chairman, Paulo Pong, expressed excitement over the rare births, noting that Ying Ying's age made this event particularly thrilling and significant for panda conservation efforts.
Although panda pregnancies are challenging to confirm, Ying Ying’s keepers observed signs at the end of July, such as decreased appetite and increased sleep, leading to the successful detection of her pregnancy.
The gestation period for pandas is lengthy and unpredictable, ranging between 72 to 324 days, often making it difficult to ascertain pregnancy until very late stages.
