Indianapolis wants to turn a traffic circle into a park. It's a brilliant idea
Briefly

Monument Circle, the geographic heart of Indianapolis, has largely been experienced as a traffic circle. However, with the introduction of Spark on the Circle from June to November 2023, part of the circle has been closed to cars to create a vibrant pop-up park. This initiative, spearheaded by Big Car Collaborative, has significantly increased pedestrian traffic, transforming the area into a destination. Landscape architects are now considering making this transformation permanent as part of a broader strategy to enhance downtown walkability and public spaces for the growing residential community.
Monument Circle, historically a traffic-centric area, has recently transformed into a vibrant pedestrian space through Spark on the Circle, enhancing city engagement.
The installation of Spark on the Circle, a pop-up park, has drawn tens of thousands of pedestrians, showcasing the space's potential beyond just cars.
