In a serious incident during the FA Cup fifth-round match, Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was taken to the hospital due to a reckless challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts. The challenge occurred just eight minutes into the game, leading to Roberts being sent off after VAR intervention. Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed his anger, claiming it was one of the worst challenges he had witnessed in football. Mateta, Palace's leading scorer, suffered a significant injury but is expected to receive further medical attention.
In all the time I've been watching football I don't think I've ever seen a worse challenge. If you're kicking someone in the head then you don't know what damage may have been done.
Referee Michael Oliver initially did not even show Roberts a yellow card despite being only a few yards away from the incident but then brandished a straight red after being called over by VAR.
