BMW is initiating a zero-defect approach for high-voltage batteries in its upcoming Neue Klasse EVs, addressing concerns over battery reliability. All battery cells undergo inspections to meet specifications, using AI-supported quality checks throughout production. The new EVs will launch with vehicles like the iX3, iX5, and an electric 3 Series. In the manufacturing process, cells are clustered, connected to cooling systems, and subjected to laser-cleaning and welding, followed by a final inspection of the entire battery pack to ensure compliance with standards.
"For production of our high-voltage batteries, we are pursuing a consistent zero-defect approach," said Markus Fallböhmer, head of Battery Production at BMW AG. "Highly intelligent, AI-supported quality checks are integrated into the production process to ensure every cell meets specifications."
BMW wants EV owners to feel assured about battery reliability, adopting a rigorous inspection system using AI-supported quality controls to address and eliminate potential defects.
