A minivan caught fire Monday morning in the Caldecott Tunnel, leading to the closure of Bore 1 and causing significant traffic snarls throughout the area.
The fire occurred shortly before 10 a.m. in the middle of eastbound Bore 1, and was extinguished about an hour later by fire crews.
Preliminary reports indicated that a passerby heroically helped pull the driver from the burning vehicle to safety, with no injuries reported.
As of 11:15 a.m., Bore 1 remained closed and crews were waiting for the vehicle to be towed from the tunnel.
