The NYS DMV has initiated a law requiring stretch limousine operators to conduct pre-trip safety presentations for passengers. Effective April 23, these briefings, akin to airplane safety demonstrations, cover vital vehicle safety features including emergency exits and tools for emergencies. This law reflects ongoing efforts to enhance limousine safety following a tragic 2018 crash in upstate New York that claimed 20 lives. The DMV has increased enforcement of limousine regulations, revoking nearly 100 registrations since 2022 due to fraudulent activities.
According to Mark J.F. Schroeder, commissioner of the DMV, the new law aims to ensure passengers are familiar with safety features in case of emergencies.
The law, which went into effect on April 23, mandates that stretch limousine operators provide a pre-trip safety presentation similar to those done for airplane passengers.
